Timeless Sri Lanka

Ancient rock fortresses at dawn. Cave temples gilded with centuries of devotion. The slow arc of the Kandy to Ella train through tea country. A wildlife safari, a colonial fort and the Indian Ocean at the end of it all. Sri Lanka at its most complete.

This is the journey that introduces the island in full, from the ancient kingdoms of the Cultural Triangle to the cool green folds of the hill country and the sun-warmed streets of Galle.

There is Sigiriya, the fifth-century rock fortress that rises two hundred metres from the plain, best climbed while the light is still amber soft and the air is cool. The cave temples of Dambulla offer a quieter sanctuary, where gilded Buddhas and painted ceilings date back to the first century BCE. In Kandy, the Temple of the Tooth Relic sits at the spiritual heart of the island, its evening ceremony remains one of the most quietly moving experiences the country offers.

The story then climbs into the highlands, where tea plantations roll to the horizon and waterfalls drop through forests. Here, the celebrated train to Ella winds through mist and green valleys at a pace that asks you to simply look. A wildlife safari might bring leopards and elephants into close, unhurried range, before the journey reaches its finale in Galle. Along the ramparts of the Dutch Fort, boutique streets and ocean views provide a perfect, tranquil conclusion. Every detail is tailored to your pace, your dates and your individual sense of adventure.
